Brief Critique Report

Our class was assigned a design brief to create a logo and other forms of graphic publications for. I was assigned the brief written by Bec which was ‘Tuns of Fun’ bowling alley and arcade. The brief stated that purple would be a recommended colour and the designs had to be flamboyant and playful. Bright colours were to be used throughout the designs and the designs had to appeal to all demographics. I created a logo, webpage mock up, A5 booklet, 3D point of sale and a shopfront mock up.
For my logo design I went for a free hand approach. My logo was purple as the brief encouraged and was in a fun playful style with did suit the brief. Bec liked the style of the logo and agreed that it suited the brief however Bec also said that the logo was a not that legible and could be hard to read. I went back and made a slight improvement to it but when I had my final critique Luke stated that it was still not legible. I should have taken more notice of this client feedback and reworked the logo to suit the clients need. The logo was spread through every part of the assignment and did not work because of its illegibility. In future I will have to take careful consideration of the client’s feedback to make sure that the job is up to their expectations.
For my A5 booklet I kept to a purple theme with playful colourful secondary graphics which I intended to carry throughout the other bodies of work. Bec really liked the booklet design and thought it was adequate for the brief. In critique it was made clear that I should not have used a drop shadow on the logo because it made it look out of place. The contact details on the back of the booklet were done in a display type face which was not suited to the text. I should have used a body typeface to communicate the contact details clearly.
For my webpage mock up I kept it to the same theme to the booklet. It was simple in design and Bec liked the design. In critique Luke stated that it was a good design however the typeface for the links was different to the other bodies of work and therefore did not show consistency.  I understand that consistency is paramount in branding and if it was changed it would be more appropriate.
For the 3D point of sale I illustrated a design for a custom desk built with the logo. In critique Luke liked the illustration but did not think it actually sells something. I could have done something different like coasters or a glass etc.
For my shopfront mock up I changed the carpet court building to fit the business. In critique Luke said that I had created the shopfront well and it is consistent with the other bodies of work.
Overall I did a good job in creating these products. In future I will have to work on type consistency and listening carefully to client feedback to make sure that the products are appropriate the brief.

Design Brief Meetings

Meeting 1.
In the first meeting I showed Bec 3 initial logo concepts that I had developed for the business. I gave her black and colour concepts and gave her insight into which concept I thought worked the best. I also showed her concept ideas for the booklet and Bec gave me insight to what she liked and that I was heading the right direction. Bec liked the vector colour designs that I had developed for the products and stated that it was following the brief well.

Meeting 2.
In the second meeting with Bec I had a bit more concrete concepts to show her and give her a greater insight into the direction I had been heading for this project. Bec liked the purple logo but informed me a might have to work on it a bit more to make it more legible and crisper. Bec also asked me to experiment with other themes. I took a lot back fro this meeting and received clear direction to finish and refine my design concepts.
